Celebrating Black History Month at Local School, October 2023
Black History Month is observed every October in the UK to celebrate the history and achievements of people with African and Caribbean heritage.
Our very own User of the Wesleyan Day Care Centre and member of the church Alan Sealy has been sharing his story with children in years 4 & 5. Alan spoke so fondly of recruitment into the British Army from Barbados, his experience of arriving in the UK and some of the obstacles that he had to overcome.
Allan shared with the children arriving and really feeling the cold arriving at the barracks, then all the strenuous training that they had to undertake.
It was obvious that the children had been preparing for his visit, as they had a number of questions that they wanted to ask.
This was a brilliant opportunity for us to share our experiences, the children were attentive and genuinely interested in what Alan was saying.
Best take away bits, were the children getting a chance to hold a lot of the medals that Alan had awarded.
This was part of an ongoing project that we had been involved with, during our funded Windrush Project this year.
